¡Viva la revolución! Netflix is coming to Cuba

Cuba
In a bit of techno-media diplomacy, Netflix announced on Monday it was making its service available in Cuba.

The company will offer a "broad range of great global entertainment" to Cuban consumers for $7.99 a month, the company announced in a blog post. That includes House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and DreamWorks Animation's All Hail King Julien, among other titles.

It's not clear whether Netflix will scrub titles like Che, CheVolution and Fidel: The Untold Story that reference the past and current political leadership in Cuba from its Cuban streaming service. Netflix reps couldn't be reached for comment.

Netflix began offering service in Latin America in 2011. The company now counts over 5 million members in the region.

The move comes after President Obama announced a surprise shift in diplomatic relations with Cuba in December. The new policy will relax travel and trade restrictions between the two countries, and the U.S. will set up an embassy in the Cuban capital of Havana. Cuba, which has an Internet penetration rate of only 5%, will also allow telecommunication companies to build Internet infrastructure there.

Netflix announced plans earlier this month to expand into Japan — its first presence in Asia — toward the end of 2015.
